MATERIAL LIBRARY

What does magic mean to you?
How to you measure the magical quality of a material?
Which materials are important to us?
How can we organize these materials into a coherent library?
Do all these materials have something in common that we can judge them by?
What kind of categories would our library need?
These are some of the questions we, the iArts year 1 students, have been working on under the guidance of Anne Büscher. Our classes consisted of bringing our own materials, discussing and comparing them; all in the theme of magic, the feeling of being enchanted by something. Collectively we created a category for our materials: Magic materials. Our aim was to create a library of these magic materials, that we can reference to when working on our projects. We decided on how we could measure the magic of a material and how this can be organized into a library. We came up with two solutions; a digital library that documents our materials and is easily accessible, and a physical library which is what we are displaying at the exhibition space. Our physical library resembles a 3D graph in which the Y axis stands for the metaphysical quality, the X axis is the hypnotic effect, and the Z axis indicates unrefined material to refined material (transmutation).
This exhibition will be visible on friday the 19th of January at Capucijnenstraat 21. We will have a small opening at 16:00 and the first 50 people get our special drink of the evening!
